Projects
Electroluminescent Cooling
Jan 2023 - Present
Masters Thesis at Penn State
  • The objective of this project is to analyze the near-field radiative heat transfer around different semiconductor based light emitting diodes (LEDs) subject to an applied voltage using the formulation of fluctuation electrodynamics.
  • MATLAB was used for modeling and analysis.
  • Prior research on this has been carried out using numerous semiconductor materials, but the ones considered by me are the ones with a relatively larger bandgap, specifically Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Gallium Indium Nitride (GaInN), since these materials are gaining popularity in daily use.
  • My advisor for this project is Dr. Linxiao Zhu, an assistant professor at Penn State's Mechanical engineering department who primarily researches in nanoscale energy and radiative heat transfer.
Course Projects at Penn State
Jan 2022 - Present
Minor Projects
  • As a part of the course requirements, in some of my courses at Penn State, I needed to do a project with a related topic either assigned by the professors directly in some cases or chosen by me. A report and a presentation are typically the requirements.
  • In the Spring semester (Jan-May 2022), I had completed a project titled Simplifying the Integral Analysis of An External Laminar Convective Flow over a flat plate with an unheated Starting Length for arbitrary Velocity and Temperature Profiles in the course titled Heat Transfer - Convection.
  • In another Spring sem course titled Numerical Solutions Applied to Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics Problems, I executed a project on developing a solver for the 2D unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using collocated pressure-based finite-volume methods for classical lid-driven cavity problem in the unit square. This was implemented using the FVM techniques learnt in the class and was executed on MATLAB using the explicit Euler time-advancement method.
  • Another spring term project that I executed was for a course titled Mechatronics. This was a fun team project where the goal was to build an autonomous robot that could navigate a maze from start to end, and that could detect and collect tennis balls on the way. This was implemented using an Arduino used with infrared and ultrasonic sensors, a USB camera for finding tennis balls, a readymade chassis that resembled a Tank which came with motors, a motor driver and a Raspberry Pi for image detection.
  • In the Fall semester (Aug-Dec 2022), I had completed a project titled Using Finite Differencing to Solve a One-Dimensional Transient Heat Conduction Problem with no Steady State Solution in the course titled Heat Transfer - Conduction.
Remote Ergonomic Risk Assessments
Apr 2020 - Present
Projects at RECOUP
  • Due to COVID-19, since majority of the users have begun working from home, it is necessary to have a correct workplace setup at home to avoid risk of work related musculoskeletal disorders.
  • This is done by doing an Ergonomic Workplace Assessment for the users by analysing their workplace setups and how they interact with their systems. This analysis is followed by identification of risk factors and recommendations on how to deal with them. All these steps are documented as a detailed report and shared with the user.
  • I have completed 300+ such ergonomic assessments of computer users.
  • I have also completed an ergonomic walk-through of a food manufacturing plant remotely. This involved interviewing the supervisor to understand the work processes of different sections of the plant, analysing the work based on the images and videos provided, using ergonomic tools to assess the degree of risk exposure, providing recommendations and preparing technical documentation of the same.
  • I have also completed a similar assessment twice for our client in the field of Semiconductor research; once for their offices and once for their laboratories.
Computer Aided Design and Automation
Jul 2018-Mar 2020
Projects at Weir EnSci
  • Majority of the projects were carried out on Siemens NX CAD software.
  • Used expressions based modelling approach to make scalable structural models for different sizes of Cone Crusher Skids, Primary Crushing Station, and Inclined Screen Skids.
  • Worked on 3D assembly and general arrangement drawing of pump-motor sets of different drive arrangements using Product Template Studio (PTS) tool of NX.
  • Used PTS Author to build user interfaces to allow easy selection of product specifications for various products, at the end of which the model will be scaled/selected accordingly.
  • Minor projects include material costing of Cone crusher skid, selection of centrifugal pump and designing a piping system layout
Analysis and Optimization of Heat Exchangers
Oct 2017-May 2019
2 Publications
Final Year B.Tech Project
  • The aim of the project was to analyse a three-fluid heat exchanger using Galerkin's finite element method in terms of effectiveness-number of transfer units plots.
  • It was initially done for 4 different arrangements of 3-fluid cross-flow heat exchangers and the one showing the best results was considered for further investigation.
  • The considered exchanger was then optimized for a given set of fluid parameters to determine the optimal dimensions for high effectiveness and low pressure drop. This was done using Genetic Algorithhm and using Particle Swarm Optimization. This has been published in a journal as follows- Jyothiprakash, K. H., Harshith, J., Sharan, A., Seetharamu, K. N., & Krishnegowda, Y. T. (2019). Thermodynamic Optimization of Three-Fluid Cross-Flow Heat Exchanger Using GA and PSO Heuristics. Thermal Science and Engineering Progress, 11, 289–301. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tsep.2019.04.009
  • Further analysis was carried out for the heat exchanger by including other effects such as heat interaction with the surroundings and heat loss due to conduction in the seperating walls of the heat exchanger. I have presented this at a conference called THERMACOMP-2018, which was held at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The abstract is on page 55 of the proceedings. Jyothiprakash, K. H., Sharan, A., Harshith, J., Krishna, V., Seetharamu, K. N., & Krishnegowda, Y. T. (2018). Combined effect of ambient heat-in-leak and longitudinal wall conduction on the performance of three-fluid cross-flow heat exchanger. In 5th International Conference on Computational Methods for Thermal Problems (pp. 55–58).
  • The analysis was also carried out for two-phase flow.
  • Skill and Experience Acquired: MATLAB, Finite Element Analysis
The entire project was hard coded on MATLAB without the help of any commercially available analysis tool. It included converting the governing equations to stiffness matrices, simulating it to observe element wise temperature distribution, and generating the results for various conditions.
Coolant Spill Reduction
June-July 2016
Internship Project at Toyota Industries Engine India
  • It was observed in the Cylinder Head Machining Line that there was a good amount of coolant being leaked from the product while getting conveyed between CNC machines and while getting loaded to and unloaded from CNC machines.
  • The aim of the project was to prepare a report to suggest suitable measures which can be adopted to reduce the amount of coolant being lost.
  • Different engineering and administrative solutions were suggested to reduce coolant leakages in the production line by up to 25% per shift.
Ball Shooting Mechanism
Aug-Nov 2014
First Year B. Tech Project
  • This project was done as a part of the "Unified Engineering" Course conducted by JED-I (Joy of Engineering Design and Innovation).
  • Each team was given a table tennis ball, and a basket of a fixed known height. The objective was to construct a model that would shoot the ball into the given basket, automatically. The horizontal distance from the basket to the shooter was variable and the shooter was expected to adjust either the speed or the angle of projection accordingly.
  • The shooter was successfully constructed with the help of foam boards, an Arduino board, an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance between the shooter and the basket, and a DC motor whose speed was a function of that distance.
  • Skill and Experience Acquired: Arduino Programming
